Some documents only work if the right person watches you sign them.

What to bring

  • The document, unsigned. Do not sign it in advance — the entire point is that the signature is made in front of us.
  • Photographic identification: a passport or a photocard driving licence.
  • The original of anything you need certified as a copy.
  • Any covering instructions from the authority that asked for the document. They frequently specify wording.

Fees for this work are fixed and quoted before we start. Call ahead so we can confirm we have someone available and tell you exactly what to bring.

Common questions

What is a Commissioner for Oaths?

A person authorised to administer oaths and take affidavits and statutory declarations. Every practising solicitor in England and Wales holds the power. It is what makes a sworn statement legally effective.

Is this the same as a notary public?

No. A notary public is a separate profession, and documents for use in some foreign jurisdictions must be notarised rather than sworn. If the receiving authority asks for a notary, a Commissioner for Oaths will not satisfy it — tell us what the document is for and we will say which you need.

Can you certify a copy of my passport?

Yes. Bring the original passport and the photocopy. We certify the copy as a true copy of the original we have seen.

Do I need an appointment?

Call first. This work is quick, but only if someone authorised is in the office when you arrive.
